The Jaffna Public Library is scheduled to undergo a major development and digitisation project with a budget of Rs. 100 million.
Chief Librarian – Anusiya Sivakaran had noted that the initiative will digitise around 2,200 books and 200 newspapers using advanced technology, ensuring the preservation of valuable collections.
The library had lost a significant number of valuable books after it was set on fire by mobs in 1981. Reconstruction had been completed by 2001.
The current government had launched the digitisation project as part of broader efforts to modernise and develop the historic library.
